IT'S TIME TO USE OUR RESOURCES MORE WISELY
Scotland has vast resources available in our forests, land, lochs and oceans, yet they are not inexhaustible. The felling of nearly 14 million trees to make way for windfarms is not just illogical (just 22 windfarms were built) but also undermines the carbon offset that wind power was supposed to bring us. Trees take many years to become efficient carbon stores and no number of saplings that replace them can do the same job.
Indiscriminate and widespread felling does more that release carbon into our strained atmosphere; it causes declines in biodiversity, species loss intensifies and our wider environment suffers the consequences.
